What is satin?

Satin is a common enough term but what actually is satin?  Unlike silk, which is a material made from strands of silk, satin refers to a weave that has a glossy surface and a dull back.  It tends to have a high lustre because of the floats on the fabric’s weave and this makes it ideal for producing bed sheets.  There are even different types of satin weave such as granite weaves and check weaves.  It is also used in a lot of clothing from sports clothes to women’s lingerie, blouses and evening gowns as well as men’s underwear, shirts and neckties.

In the Middle Ages, satin was made from silk so was a very expensive material only available to the most well off.  It became famous in Europe in the 12th century and was named for the Chinese port city of Quanzhou, whose Arabic name was Zayton.  This port was a major stop on the maritime Silk Road to transport materials from China to Europe.

Benefits of Satin

The smoothness and comfort level of satin sheets has long been known and their ability to sooth the sleeper into a good night’s sleep is clear.  However, more recent studies have also shown that satin is good for both hair and skin because it allows both to maintain the natural moistures level they need.  Cotton is a great absorber, which can be ideal if you perspire a lot at night, but otherwise this can take away the goodness from skin and hair.  It has even been suggested that the softness of satin sheets help to stave off the wrinkles on skin that are associated with getting older.

Similarly, satin sheets and pillowcases can be beneficial for hair quality because they don’t generate friction in the way that cotton does.  This means hair doesn’t get too dry and brittle and less snapping or broken hairs on the pillow.
